Backyard
Management of Yard Debris
1.
Burning creates air pollution, is a health hazard to people with
asthma and other allergies, creates a fire hazard, and is a
nuisance to neighbors.
2.
Urbanization of the county makes the old management practice of
burning obsolete- and it’s a waste of resources.
3.
Compost is a useful soil amendment that improves health and
fertility of soil (ads nutrients to support soil microorganisms,
improves tilth of clay soils in area), saves water by helping soil
hold moisture, and reduces runoff.
4.
Mulching leaves in place saves raking, amends the soil.
5.
Leaving grass clippings on the lawn adds valuable nitrogen back
into the soil, saving on fertilizer (Clippings from a 1000 sq. ft.
lawn contain 6# nitrogen, 1# potassium).
6.
Backyard management of yard debris saves municipal tax dollars for
collection and processing.
7.
Use natural areas, ground covers and planting beds under trees
when landscaping so leaves can be left to decompose in these area.
8.
Try any or all of the options to see what suits your yard and the
amount of yard debris generated- see website for more
information. www.waukeshacounty.gov/recycling
